What are soft gel nail extensions?

Soft gel extensions are pre-shaped, full-cover nail tips made from soak-off gel. Unlike traditional tips that cover only the free edge, a soft gel tip covers the entire nail plate and is secured using a compatible, light-cured gel adhesive.

Once applied correctly, soft gel extensions provide instant length and shape with a lightweight, flexible finish. They can be filed, coloured and decorated to create anything from natural manicures to detailed nail art.

Shop Aprés Gel‑X and Kiara Sky Gelly Tips

TNBL stocks professional soft-gel extension systems from Aprés and Kiara Sky.

Aprés Gel‑X offers full-cover gel tips in natural and sculpted fits, with shapes including almond, square, coffin, round and stiletto. Kiara Sky Gelly Tips provide another complete soft-gel extension system, with starter kits, refill tips and dedicated application products.

For reliable results, use tips with the preparation products, adhesive gel and curing equipment recommended by the relevant manufacturer. Do not assume that application steps and cure requirements are identical across different systems.

What do I need for soft gel extensions?

A professional soft-gel extension service normally requires:

  1. Full-cover soft gel tips in the correct shape, length and fit
  2. Natural-nail preparation tools
  3. Dehydrator or pH bonder where required by the system
  4. Compatible primer
  5. Soft-gel tip prep or an approved method of preparing the tip
  6. Compatible gel adhesive or Extend Gel
  7. A flash-cure light for holding the tip in position
  8. A compatible full-size LED lamp for the complete cure
  9. Nail files and buffers
  10. Gel colour and top coat
  11. Professional removal products and cuticle oil

Always follow the current instructions supplied by the manufacturer. Avoid mixing systems unless compatibility has been confirmed.

How do I choose the right soft gel tips?

Select the fit before choosing the shape or length.

Natural-fit tips are generally designed for flatter nail plates with a lower apex. Sculpted tips normally provide additional structure and a deeper curve for clients with more pronounced C-curves or higher nail arches.

Each tip should cover the natural nail from sidewall to sidewall without being forced into position. If a client falls between sizes, select the slightly larger tip and carefully refine the sidewalls according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Do I need both a flash-cure and full-size lamp?

A flash-cure light helps hold an individual soft gel tip in place while maintaining its position and preventing air bubbles. It does not necessarily replace the full cure required by the system.

After flash curing, complete the cure using the compatible full-size lamp and cure time specified by the manufacturer.

How long do soft gel extensions last?

Wear time depends on the system, nail preparation, tip fit, product application, curing and client aftercare. When professionally applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions, some systems advertise wear of approximately three to four weeks.

Individual results vary. Avoid guaranteeing a particular wear period for every client.

How are soft gel extensions removed?

Soft gel extensions are designed to be filed down and soaked off using the appropriate professional removal process. Never pull or force extensions from the natural nail, as this can remove layers of the nail plate.

Follow the relevant manufacturer’s removal instructions and use suitable files, acetone or system remover, wraps and aftercare products.

Professional-use information

Gel products can cause sensitisation or allergic reactions if uncured product repeatedly contacts the skin or is not cured correctly. Apply carefully, avoid skin contact and use the lamp and curing instructions recommended for the exact system.

HEMA-free does not mean allergy-free. Other acrylates and methacrylates may still cause reactions. Product suitability should be assessed individually, and use should be discontinued if an unexpected reaction occurs.
